Interview Tips

PREPARING FOR YOUR MONOUX INTERVIEW

If you’ve applied for a place at Monoux Sixth Form College, you’ll soon receive a date for your interview. There’s no need to worry – it’s simply a great chance for you, and for us, to check that you’re choosing the right course so you can get the best possible start to your journey here at Monoux.

There are plenty of tips and advice online, but we wanted to share some helpful guidance in this blog to support you as you get ready.

If you have any specific questions about your interview, please get in touch – our team is always happy to help.

Getting Prepared

  • Preparation is key for any interview. You will be sent a date and time for your interview by letter, e-mail and text message – make sure you make a note of it straight away and set a reminder on your phone for a couple of days before.  If your interview is during term time please inform your current school/college.
  • Give some thought to the following in advance of your interview;
    • What courses you are interested in studying and why you are interested in studying them?
    • What are you interested in doing after Monoux (applying to university, looking for an apprenticeship etc.)?
    • Is there a dream career/job you have in mind for the future?
  • If you are unsure of the date and time of your appointment, you can double check the details by e-mailing admissions@sgmc.ac.uk.  If the date and time of the interview is not convenient, please get in touch with us and we can rearrange it for you.

Top Tips

  • Plan your journey in advance – use the TfL website (Plan a journey - Transport for London) to plan your journey to the college.  This will help you to…
  • Arrive early – this means you’ll feel more confident and less stressed than if you’re rushing to get here.
  • Eat and drink – try and make sure you have something to eat an hour or two before the interview to prevent your stomach rumbling and have a drink of water beforehand.  It will help to refresh your mind and improve your focus.
  • Dress code – Dress casually, but smartly – this will help with your confidence and put you in the right mind space.

Practice makes perfect

A practice run with a friend or family member is a good idea.  The questions below are some common questions asked at sixth form interviews.  You might not be asked these exact questions at your interview, but they’re a good starting point to help you prepare.  Why not send them to a family member and ask them to pretend to be the interviewer?  Remember, practice makes perfect and they’ll probably be able to give you some useful feedback too;

Why have you chosen this course? – This is the perfect opportunity to show your enthusiasm and understanding of the course.

What are you hoping to gain from the course? – This enables the tutor to understand your expectations. Your education is our number one priority, so we want to ensure it is the most appropriate course for fulfilling your aspirations.

What would you like to do after your course? – Consider where you would like the course to take you.  How will this course help you achieve your goals?  Not everyone knows what they want to do, and that’s ok – the course might be a stepping stone to something else, or it may help you decide on a career – there is no right answer.

Do you have any questions for us? – Asking questions is your chance to get as much information that you need to make sure this is the right course for you. If there is anything you are unsure of, this is the perfect opportunity to ask.

Be yourself

Try not to get too stressed about the interview.  Think of it as a discussion with your interviewer rather than a test and remember, there are no wrong answers.  Although it is important for us to guide you towards the right course, it is just as important for you to ensure that the course suits your expectations.  Feel free to talk to your interviewer about the things you like, your hobbies and what your future plans are – and feel free to ask as many questions as you like.  We’re here to support you.  Good luck!
